Course Description:[edit | edit source]

Welcome to Vrije Universiteit Brussel's Evidence-based Practice project. This project was created by and for the students in the Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy program of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium, and is part of the Musculoskeletal curriculum.

The goals of the project are to obtain an educational process leading to the competency: 'critical attitude towards translation of (scientific)information for clinical practice' (part of the 'role' PT as a healthcare provider).

PT students are asked to review literature and apply the Delphi quality evaluation procedure to (at least) two RCT's evaluating effectiveness of physiotherapy in health problems related to the musculoskeletal system.

Formerly (2011) they were asked to select a test, a clinical procedure or a health problem (pathology with indication for PT) and write a short paper for their e-portfolio. A year later they were asked to do the same and select a blanc topic in 'Physiopedia', create a new topic or add substantial information to an already initiated topic. In 2013 about 110 students of the second bachelor and 78 students of the 3th bachelor wil correct pages that have been developed in recent years. They have to look for an English speaking physiotherapy or physical therapy student to co-edit the text.In 2014, 2015 and 2016 the project is continued.

Students have to refer (in the text) to different kinds of sources and document the quality of the used sources usng 'Levels of Evidence' (levels 1(A,B,C), 2(ABC), 3(A,B), 4 or 5 (See http://www.physio-pedia.com/Grades_%26_Levels_of_Evidence).

Students select a topic in October and report their choice during a personal meeting with staff by the end of October. When the topic is accepted they have 6 weeks (deadline mid December) to write a short text using the format of Physiopedia. By the end December all texts will be reviewed by our staff and following editing text that received grades A or B will be allowed to be posted on Physiopedia. If relevant, students will contact former editors of text already available on Physiopedia.

One of the educational goals of the third phase of the project is to study the level of different competencies obtained by students in writing a contribution for physiopedia. Furthermore we want to stimulate international exchange of university staff and students by initiating the project.
