Human Immunodeficiency Virus (more commonly referred to as HIV) is a virus that causes a weakening of the immune system (immunodeficiency) resulting in the body becoming prone to opportunistic infections. If HIV is not treated and/or the immune system becomes severely damaged by HIV it can advance to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). AIDS describes the development of potentially life-threatening infections, cancers and other severe long-term conditions.
