Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure in which parts of a damaged joint are removed and replaced with a metal, plastic, or ceramic prosthesis. The prosthesis is engineered to recreate the movement of a normal, healthy joint.
Numerous types of arthroplasty exists ranging from complete replacement of everyside of the joint (total joint replacement) or only one articular surface (hemiarthroplasty), and various other procedures exist which attempt to realigne the joint (e.g. osteotomies) or resurfacing with tissue.  Various combinations of metal, ceramics and synthetic materials may be employed.
