Purpose[edit | edit source]

The Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) evaluates various sleep disorders including difficulties in falling asleep and staying asleep, sleep-disordered breathing, arousal disorders, sleep-wake transition disorders, excessive sleepiness, and excessive sweating during sleep (hyperhidrosis)[1]. The tool has been translated into multiple languages, demonstrating satisfactory validity and reliability[2][3][4]. It is easy to fill in[5]. It is an excellent screening tool, for alerting and reassuring parents about their child's sleep, and also for helping paediatric professionals by making a sleep diagnosis and advising about treatments[6].

Intended population[edit | edit source]

Technique[edit | edit source]

  • Administration: the questionnaire is filled out by a parent or caregiver on behalf of the child, typically using pencil and paper.
  • Time to administer: 10-15 minutes.

Scoring[edit | edit source]

The six subscales are rated on a 5-point Likert scale, assessing the occurrences over the past 6 months, with higher numbers reflecting a higher frequency of symptoms: 1 means ''never'', 2 means ''up to once or twice per month'', 3 means ''once or twice per week'', 4 means ''3-5 times per week'', 5 means ''always''. There is a cutoff score of 39[1] .

The total sleep score is derived by adding up individual scores, with the potential range being from 26 to 130[1]. After summing the scores for the different scales, the values must be filled in the scoring sheet in order to obtain a sleep profile.

Psychometric values[edit | edit source]

  • Internal consistency: ranging from 0.71 - 0.79[1].
  • Test-retest reliability: 0.71[1].
  • Diagnostic accuracy 0.91[1].
  • Validation in other countries:
    • China[14]: the Chinese version is reliable and useful for screening for sleep disorders in Chinese children. Internal consistency: adequate reliability (Chronbach's α°0.81).
    • France[6]: the french version's psychometric values are as good as other languages. Internal consistency is very good. Construct validity is good. Concurrent validity is very good. Internal reliability is good. Diagnosis validity is satisfactory.
    • Iran[15]: overall the psychometric values are appropriate for Iranian children. Convergent validity is acceptable (r=0.22-0.76).
    • Mexico[16]: the psychometric values are appropriate.
    • Spain[17]: the Spanish version is a good instrument for assessing sleep disturbances. The reliability is good (Chronbach α= 0.82). Convergent validity is good (range = 0.41-0.70).
    • Turkey[18]: the Turkish version is valid and reliable. Internal consistency is high (Cronbach α = 0.84). Test-retest reliability is high.
