Cardiac Rehabilitation

Introduction[edit | edit source]

Cardiac rehabilitation is an accepted form of management for people with cardiac disease. Initially, rehabilitation was offered mainly to people recovering from a myocardial infraction (MI), but now encompasses a wide range of cardiac problems. [1]

Description[edit | edit source]

[2]

Indication[edit | edit source]

Cardiac rehabilitation should be offered to all cardiac patients who would benefit.[1] CR is mainly prescribed to patients with ischemic heart disease, with myocardial infarction, after coronary angioplasty, after coronaro-aortic by-pass graft surgery and to patients with chronic heart failure. CR begins as soon as possible in intensive care units, only if the patient is in stable medical condition. Intensity of rehabilitation depends on patient´s condition and complications in acute phase of disease.[3]

Phases[edit | edit source]

CR contains three phases. Each of them could be realised by several models of intensity, depends on physical fitness and cardio-vascular risk factors.Early CR contains phase I and II, late CR contains phase III.

Phase I is performed always in hospital. The duration of this phase lasts from 7 to 14 weeks, when patient is able to discharge hospital.

Phase II lasts from 4 to 12 weeks. This phase could be realised in stationary cardiac rehabilitation centres – cardiology departments, cardiac sanatoriums and even in ambulatory cardiology rehabilitation centres or in home conditions.

Phase III – late CR. This phase should last lifetime and should be a part of a healthy lifestyle. It should take into consideration personal interests ordering kind of physical activity. The goal of rehabilitation in this period is to improve exercise tolerance, to diminish recurrence of coronary events and to maintain previous therapy and rehabilitation effects. This phase is guided under the supervision of specialists in cardiology, rehabilitation or family physicians.[3]
