In the time frame October-December 2010 the students will select information concerning one specific pathology from the musculoskeletal field with possible indications for physiotherapy or a test used by physiotherapists. At least three recent high quality scientific references have to be cited to document the presented information.

The goals of our project are:

#all students of the second bachelor year have to develop a personal and efficient literature search strategy
#students have to learn to select information necessary to understand specific pathology/complaint (extremities in the second bachelor and spine in the third bachelor)

Course Description:[edit | edit source]

This project is a component of the Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy program of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium.

The goasl of the project are to obtain an educational process leading to the competency: 'critical attitude towards translation of (scientific)information for clinical practice' (part of the 'role' PT as a healthcare provider).

PT students are asked to review literature and apply the Delphi quality evaluation procedure to (at least) two RCT's evaluating effectiveness of physiotherapy in health problems related to the musculoskeletal system.

Formerly they were asked to select a test, a clinical procedure or a health problem (pathology with indication for PT) and write a short paper for their e-portfolio. Now they were asked to do the same and select a blanc topic in 'Physiopedia', create a new topic or add substantial information to an already initiated topic.

They have to refer (in the text) to different kinds of sources and document the quality of the used sources (levels A1, A2, B, C of D).

Students select a topic in October and report their choice during a personal meeting with staff by the end of October. When the topic is accepted they have 4 weeks (deadline November 27th) to write a short text using the format of Physiopedia. By the end of November/ beginning of December all texts will be reviewed by our staff and following editing students will be allowed to post their texts on Physiopedia. If relevant, students will contact former editors of text already available on Physiopedia.

One of the educational goals of the project is to study the level of different competencies obtained by students in writing a contribution for physiopedia. Furthermore we want to stimulate international exchange of university staff and students by initiating the project.

A template for the article pages which contains sub-headings headings for the disorder has been provided, please follow the template for uniformity of content.
