I achieved a 2:1 BSc Hons Physiotherapy 2008 from The University of Ulster. My HCPC registration is up to date and my Registration number is PH88712. I am a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and my member number is 081427. In October 2019 I received my CORU registration (PT040271) and in July 2019 I became a member of Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (16426).
My physiotherapy career began working as a rotational Band 5 for the Southland District Health Board in New Zealand from the period March 2009- March 2010. During this time, I completed four monthly rotations in musculoskeletal outpatients including hydrotherapy, medical and surgical wards including HDU, Paediatric ward including maternity wards, and domiciliary. I also participated in on-call duties. I provided physiotherapy support to Marist Rugby Team during my time in New Zealand.
On my return from New Zealand I obtained a rotational Band 5 post within the Southern Health and Social Care Trust that started my career in the NHS, commencing May 2010. Within this post I completed rotations in Community Adult Learning Disability, domiciliary, Lurgan Day Hospital, Armagh musculoskeletal out-patients, Craigavon Area Hospital medical & surgical wards & ICU, including on-call duties. In October 2011 I attained an acting-up band 6 post in Armagh & Dungannon Locality. On commencing this post, I worked in Loane House rehabilitation wards, which included elderly care & stroke rehabilitation. In February 2012 I was seconded to Mullinure Day Hospital and Community COPD Teams in Armagh & Newry, which included running Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs within community settings. In May 2013 I had then been seconded to Daisy Hill Hospital acute and rehabilitation wards and MSK outpatients.
In 2014 I left the NHS for a period and worked as a Disability Assessor. This was a challenging role and provided me with new learning experiences and developed my report writing skills. I then returned to the NHS as a rotational physiotherapist and worked in Lurgan Hospital Stroke unit and rehabilitation wards before I obtained a band 6 post with the Community Respiratory Team.
Throughout my career as a physiotherapist in the NHS, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team had been paramount. During my time working on medical, surgical & rehabilitation wards multi-disciplinary team working presented itself through attending regular patient flow meetings or patient/family meetings, making and receiving referrals from various members of the MDT, liaison & combined treatments with colleague physiotherapists, rehabilitation assistants, other Allied Health Professionals, Medical & Nursing staff. Within my community and outpatient rotations multi-disciplinary team working took the form of regular communication with GPs, district nurses, specialist nurses, community OT's, specialists teams such as memory services or access information, domiciliary carers, Nursing Home staff and patient's families. It was a vital part of this role to make and receive referrals, to liaise & complete joint home visits with and be involved in training or receive training from any of the above.
From October 2017 I took up a part time MSK post in private practice. I worked both in the NHS and in private practice until September 2018. I now work fulltime in private practice at Senior level.
Since taking up my post in private practice I have recently completed the following postgraduate courses; • Introductory course to dry needling • Kinesiology Taping • Pilates Teacher Training Institute Foundations 1 & 2 mat work • Benoy Matthew and Glen Robinson: The Adult Hip Patient. • Jeremy Lewis Shoulder course • Grade 5 Spinal Manipulation • Foundation and Advanced Dry Needling (I am now an accredited Dry Needling practitioner)
By completing these courses, I have been able to perform dry needling for patient’s where it has been therapeutically indicated and have been teaching mat-based Pilates both individually and in group setting. I am now investing myself into Pelvic Health Physiotherapy and am currently developing my skills to work clinically in this specialist field.
