Patient-centered Care and Professionalism[edit | edit source]

Patient-centered care can be defined according to five dimensions which are: [1]

  • the biopsychosocial perspective
    • this involves the practicing of holistic care
  • the patient as a person perspective
    • this emphasises the fact that each patient is unique
  • shared power and responsibility perspective
    • here the focus is on shared-decision making and empowering patients to make informed decisions about their health and taking ownership of their health and improving patient participation in the healthcare plan
  • therapeutic alliance
    • cultivating the true of value of the relationship between the patient and the healthcare professional
  • coordinated care
    • patients should "experience continuity in their care"[1]

Patient-centered care involves[1]:

  • empathy
  • compassion
  • respect
  • engagement
  • relationship
  • communication
  • shared decision making
  • holistic treatment
  • individualised care
  • cultural competence

Patient-centered care is associated with increased[1]:

  • patient satisfaction
  • engagement in care
  • quality of life

Trust is a major influencer of the patient-healthcare professional relationship.[2] Healthcare professionals build trust by exhibiting clinical expertise and effectiveness.[2] More so, trust is build with patients and colleagues through maintaining high standards of professionalism. These can include maintaining high standards of moral responsibility, showing respect, compassion and integrity.[2] Also by following a patient-centered approach and understanding the patient's uniqueness and their experience of the situation that they are in. Clear and honest communication is necessary to foster trust between a patient and a healthcare professional.[2]
