Patient-centered Care[edit | edit source]
Patient-centered care can be defined according to five dimensions which are: [1]
- the biopsychosocial perspective
- this involves the practicing of holistic care
- the patient as a person perspective
- this emphasises the fact that each patient is unique
- shared power and responsibility perspective
- here the focus is on shared-decision making and empowering patients to make informed decisions about their health and taking ownership of their health and improving patient participation in the healthcare plan
- therapeutic alliance
- cultivating the true of value of the relationship between the patient and the healthcare professional
- coordinated care
- patients should "experience continuity in their care"[1]
Patient-centered care involves[1]:
- empathy
- respect
- engagement
- relationship
- communication
- shared decision making
- holistic treatment
- individualised care
Patient-centered care is associated with increased[1]:
- patient satisfaction
- engagement in care
- quality of life
Trust is a major influencer of the patient-healthcare professional relationship.[2] Healthcare professionals build trust by exhibiting clinical expertise and effectiveness.[2] More so, trust is build with patients and colleagues through maintaining high standards of professionalism. These can include maintaining high standards of moral responsibility, showing respect, compassion and integrity.[2] Also by following a patient-centered approach and understanding the patient's uniqueness and their experience of the situation that they are in. Clear and honest communication is necessary to foster trust between a patient and a healthcare professional.[2]
