Opponens pollicis is a muscle of thenar eminence, it is triangular in shape and lies deep to flexor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis brevis
Origin[edit | edit source]
Originates from the flexor retinaculum, tubercles of scaphoid and trapezium, abductor pollicis longus tendon.
Insertion[edit | edit source]
Radial side of the base of proximal phalanx of thumb
Nervepalmar[edit | edit source]
It is supplied by the median nerve (C8, T1)
Artery[edit | edit source]
It receives blood supply from superficial arch
Function[edit | edit source]
Rotates thumb into opposition with fingers
Assessment[edit | edit source]
it is tested with the forearm in supination, wrist in neutral, thumb in adduction with MP and IP joints in flexion and instruct the patient to bring his/her thumb to the little finger and touch the two pads, forming the letter 'O' with thumb and little finger
