Lateral Plantar Nerve[edit | edit source]
The lateral plantar nerve (LPN) or external plantar nerve (latin: nervous plantaris lateralis) is a terminal branch of the tibial nerve. The LPN enters the foot passing deeply into the abuctor hallucis muscle, then is directed anteriorlly and laterally through the sole between the flexor digitorum brevis and quadratus plantae muscles, medial to the lateral plantar artery. It is a is a sensorimotor nerve, it inervates all the intrinsic musculature of the foot sole except from (abductor hallucis, flexor digitorum brevis, flexor hallucis brevis, and first lumbrical). Sensory it inervates a skin band located on the lateral face of the two anterior thirds of the sole, aswell as the adjacent surfaces of the fisth and half of the fourth toeIt divides into a superficial and a deep branch.
- Deep branch: is a motor branch, and supplies the second to the fourth lumbrical muscles, adductor hallucis abd all the plantar interossei except from those in the 4th intermetatarsal space which are inervated by the superficial branch.
- Superficial branch: it splits into a proper and common plantar digital nerve.
- The proper plantar digital nerve. which inervates the lateral aspect of the fifth toe and a branch for innervation of the flexor digiti quinti brevis.
- The 4th common plantar digital nerve, which communicates with the third common plantar digital branch of the medial plantar nerve and divides into two proper digital nerves, which supply the adjoining sides of the fourth and fifth toes. The 4th common plantar digital nerve also has a branch that supplies the interosseus muscles of the 4th intermetatarsal space.
