Description[edit | edit source]

[1]Abductor digiti minimi

It is a small, unipenate muscle situated on the sole of the lateral border of the foot[2]. it is homologous to abductor digiti minimi of hand.

Origin[edit | edit source]

Lateral and medial processes of calcaneal tuberosity[2][3], plantar aponeurosis[2] and intermuscular septum[3]

Insertion[edit | edit source]

Lateral side of base of proximal phalanx of fifth toe[2][3]

Nerve[edit | edit source]

Lateral plantar nerve(S1-S3) from tibial nerve[2][3]

Artery[edit | edit source]

Supplied by the lateral plantar artery[2][3]

Function[edit | edit source]

Abducts 5h toe at metatarsophalangeal joint[2][3] and supports the longitudinal arch of the foot[2].

[4]

Clinical relevance[edit | edit source]

In rare conditions, the muscle may be bifid. The additional belly can be used as a flap in reconstructive surgery of the foot[5][6] and may be involved in Baxter neuropathy[5][3].
