The tracheobronchial tree is composed of the trachea, the bronchi, and the bronchioles that transport air from the environment to the lungs for gas exchange.  Also referred to in th as the lower airway.


It is partitioned into 23 generations of dichotomous branching, extending from trachea (generation 0) to the last order of terminal bronchioles (generation 23). At each generation, each airway is being divided into two smaller daughter airways.
