Ira Gorman, PT, MSPH, Assistant Professor, School of Physical Therapy, Rueckert-Hartman College for Health Professions, Regis University

Ira graduated with a B.S. in Biological Science in 1977 and a B.S. in physical therapy in 1979 both from SUNY at Stony Brook and then received a Master of Science in Public Health in 1994 from the School of Medicine at University of Colorado Health Science Center, Department of Preventive Medicine. He is presently working toward a Ph.D. in Health and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Colorado-Denver with a research interest in the effect of the built environment on childhood physical activity and obesity levels. He is presently a member of the Taking Neighborhood Health to Heart research team a NHLBI funded study through the Colorado Health Outcomes Program (COHO) aimed at reducing CVD (cardiovascular disease) risk and health disparities through active living communities.

Present teaching responsibilities at Regis University in the entry level DPT and the transition DPT program include graduate level courses in Health Care Policy and Dynamics of Physical Therapy Practice, as well as clinical courses in Diagnostic Imaging, Differential Diagnosis, Management Applications of Physiology, Physical Therapy Examination and professional Issues. He also supervises student research projects aimed at studying the effects of school based physical activity on children’s BMI and fitness levels in elementary schools.

Mr. Gorman serves on the APTA/Colorado Chapter government affairs committee and is the state’s Federal Affairs Liaison to APTA. He is presently the Colorado Chief Delegate to the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) House of Delegates. He was the chair of the Colorado Referral for Profit task force. He has served on the APTA PT-PAC board of trustees. He was the chair of the nominating committee for the Health Policy and Administration section of APTA. He also serves as the physical therapy representative to the Trailblazer Health Enterprises, Medicare Intermediary Advisory Committee for the Colorado region. He has been on the board of directors of various physical therapy network provider organizations, serves on the Division of Labor, Dept of Worker’s Compensation medical treatment guidelines task force, and is a physical therapy consultant to the advisory committee member of the Colorado Dept. of Regulatory Agencies, Physical Therapy Licensure. He has been involved in health care reform issues and injury prevention for over 25 years with his present research interest in physical activity and obesity.
