About Me
[edit | edit source]

Dr. Barnes' research can be divided into three categories. The first line of research is focused on student projects in the Physical Therapy program. Interest in the cortical control of movement and how it responds to changes is a primary focus. Projects are designed to investigate the efficacy on therapeutic interventions, goal direction and mental imagery on rehabilition and the clinical impact on patient populations with damage to the Central Nervous System. The other line of research specific to Physical Therapy practice is looking at the effects of exercise on gait in persons with Parkinson's disease, specifically those who experience freezing of gait.

The second category is foundational and is focused on Central Nervous System structures and pathways involved in the perception of taste. This research investigates the specific structures and mechanisms that integrate taste sensations within the brainstem of the rat. This line of research has a direct link to how an organism uses sensory perception in learning and memory. Taste is a powerful sensation that impacts emotion and motivation.

The third line of research is involved with development of teaching methods. Current studies are involved in the development of integrated laboratory exercises designed to foster greater learning of neuroscience concepts and research techniques. Another project is the inclusion of various technologies that support learning in Anatomy and Neuroscience, including the development and implementation of, "The Visible Human Dissector", a three-dimensional program that allows the student to "dissect" a human cadaver on the computer.
