I am a qualified physiotherapist, now working as a lecturer at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland.
I received my BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy in 1998 from Queen Margaret University College (QMUC), after which I studied for my PhD, completing in 2002. I focused on investigating physical activity, influences on participation, and psychological well-being.
I worked clinically for a time at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline, within different clinical areas, and while there I moved back into research when asked to conduct a needs assessment of lymphoedema services in Fife.
After this I returned to QMUC, working part time as a lecturer, and part time as a research fellow on the Sports Physiotherapy for All Project. This was an EU-funded project that developed Master’s level competencies, standards, and educational resources for Sports Physiotherapists internationally.
Since completing my involvement in that project, I have been a full-time lecturer, focusing my research on chronic diseases, including morbidity after breast cancer (including lymphoedema), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, multiple sclerosis and late-stage stroke. I use quantitative and qualitative methodologies to study experiences of these conditions and the impacts of physical activity/exercise and other strategies for increasing participation in rehabilitation and self-management. The development and evaluation of appropriate measurement strategies forms a part of this work. In my teaching I have a particular interest in working with international students who are adapting to a new educational culture and environment, and finding ways of facilitating their development.
