Dr Kirkland graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2003 with her Masters degree in Physical Therapy, where she received the Richard Borden award for clinical excellence. She received her manual therapy certification in 2005 when she trained under Dr Richard Erhard. In 2007, she completed a sports residency program through Proaxis Physical Therapy, and received board certification in sports physical therapy. She graduated in December 2009 from Regis University with a Transitional Doctorate as well as a Fellowship in Manual Therapy. She became board certified in Orthopedic Physical Therapy in 2009. Amy currently works for the University of Utah via San Antonio, TX. She is the research coordinator for a multisite study investigating the benefits of both lumbar and cervical traction. She also practices PRN for Texas Physical Therapy Specialists. Her research interests include the spine, as well as outcomes of PT diagnosis in a primary point of care role. She is a lead faculty member for Evidence In Motion and also serves as Director of Virtual Rounds, and course coordinator for the Postoperative Management Course. Invited presentations include those related to athletics and spine for the Steadman Hawkins Sports Symposium and Primary Care Symposium. Other presentations have included the APTA Annual Conference, South Carolina Chapter of the APTA district and state meetings, South Carolina Coaches Association Upstate Conference, and the South Carolina Athletic Trainers Association State Conference. Her case study, “Surgical and Therapeutic Management of a Complete Hamstring Avulsion after a Failed Conservative Approach”, was published in JOSPT and was presented at the national AAOMPT meeting. Amy is a member of the Orthopedics Section of the APTA and AAOMPT. In her spare time she enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and watching the basketball team from the University of North Carolina.
