Case Study: Shoulder Impingement by Katie Melvin

What are the strengths of this article? This article provides a clear audio and visual walk through of the assessment and clinical reasoning processes used in this case study of the assessment of a patient with shoulder pain.

What areas of this article could be improved? The article could include more reference to evidence regarding the choice of special tests and treatment modalities used.

Is the content on the page comprehensive and appropriately structured? The content is well structured and the audio and visual elements progress at an appropriate pace.

Is the page written in an appropriate style for practicing clinicians? This page is particularly appropriate for practicing clinicians and students working in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Are the key points made on the page referenced correctly? There are no references associated with this case study.

Are all the appropriate issues and arguments included in the page? Most of the elements of the assessment and clinical reasoning process are well covered however more discussion around differential diagnoses and evidence based practice would improve the case study.

Are any key and recent pieces of research missing from the page? There is no research referenced in this case study.

Did you find any errors in the content? The case study does not include many statements of fact, however the potential differential diagnoses and treatment options could be expanded. It could be considered slightly misleading if a viewer considered these to be the only differential diagnoses or treatment modalities appropriate or available for shoulder pain.

Are there any topics that are not included in the article/topic that you would like to see? See above - further discussion of different diagnoses and evidence base for the choice of assessment tests and treatment modalities would improve the case study.

Are there any topics that you feel should be covered in greater or less detail? A discussion of the evidence for the use merits of different shoulder impingement tests would be an interesting addition to the case study.
Did you feel the content was current? If not, how could it be more up-to-date?
See above - this is an interesting area of current debate.

Finally, would you use this article in your teaching or clinical work? Please state the reasons why or why not? I would use this article as an example of a clear case study presentation which could be of value for junior or student physiotherapists. It describes an interesting case and could be used as a good prompter for discussion around shoulder pain assessment and diagnosis in a continuing professional development session.

Please record your suggestions to improve the page below:
Include referencing for special tests and treatment modalities
Consider wider range of differential diagnoses
A follow-up detailing the outcomes of treatment would be interesting.
