Respiratory System

Introduction[edit | edit source]

The lungs and respiratory system allow us to breathe. They bring oxygen into our bodies (called inspiration, or inhalation) and send carbon dioxide out (called expiration, or exhalation)[1].

This exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide is called respiration.

The human respiratory system comprises of

  • the nose
  • pharynx (throat)
  • larynx (voice box)
  • trachea (windpipe)
  • bronchi, and lungs.

The respiratory system is divided based on structure and function. The most basic function of the system is to provide oxygen to the body and remove carbon dioxide. Though it also performs some non-respiratory functions.

Classification of Respiratory Function[edit | edit source]

The respiratory system is divided based on the structure into two distinct parts:

  • Upper Respiratory Sytem
  • Lower Respiratory System

Based on function the system is divided into two zones:

  • Conducting Zone
  • Respiratory Zone
