About Me[edit | edit source]

My name is Orla Barry, and I am  the Professional Development Coordinator for the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists.

I gradutated from University College Dublin with a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy in June 2009. Due to the poor economic situtation in Ireland at the time, I relocated to New Zealand to gain experience of physiotherapy.

I lived in New Zealand for almost 3 years working primarily in private practice and musculoskeletal physiotherapy. I gained experience in sports physiotherapy, Women's Health and rehabilitation. I have extensive experience teaching pilates having being mentored in a large pilates studio in Auckland, and have since completed the APPI Level 1 Matwork course.

I returned home to Ireland in May 2012 and continued to work in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and teach pilates classes.

Throughout my career, I have been passionate about education and learning. I have engaged in as much CPD as possible, and have encouraged the same of my colleagues. During my time in New Zealand I was responsible for managing staff members and this included the provision of CPD.

This commitment to professional development, learning and education led me to moving out of clinical practice into my role with the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. This role allows me to manage, and coordinate the CPD acitvities offered to our members. I am also responsible for our Social Media Strategy relating to education and development. I am dedicated to enhancing and improving the CPD offerings for physiotherapists in Ireland - and believe that social media and technology can lead the way.

I am also determined to create a system of quality assurance in the provision of CPD courses, and to establish a mentoring system and support network for new and isolated physiotherapists.

This role allows me a high level of interaction with physiotherapy colleagues and undergraduate physiotherapy students. I often give presentations and talks related to education, professional development and support networks. I am also involved in CV and application preparation and interview skills with new and recent graduates.

I am passionate about the development and enhancement of the physiotherapy profession.
