About Me[edit | edit source]

I am Alice Chan, currently a graduate student in the Master of Science in Physical Therapy (MScPT) program at the University of Alberta.

While I am currently in training to become a movement specialist, I began my academic journey by understanding the movement of organic molecules.

As a researcher in organic chemistry, I worked on novel methodologies towards the synthesis for biologically active compounds. Eventually my projects drifted closer and closer to biological sciences, including a book chapter in biochemical pharmacology and a publication related to antibiotics. Meanwhile, I was also involved in teaching organic chemistry, where I progressed from being a teaching assistant to a supervisory teaching assistant.

Our own bodies are reactors in which countless of organic reactions take place simultaneously! Having a background in organic chemistry enables me to appreciate and understand the human body at work. Meanwhile, my interactions with students provided me with a solid foundation in educating our clients.

Thanks to a ruptured plantaris tendon and a torn Achilles tendon, my passion in contributing to the health care system was sparked. The volunteering experience at the University of Calgary Sports Medicine Centre directed me towards physiotherapy. Eventually this passion also landed me a job as a physiotherapist aide at the same centre.

In my spare time, I like to hike, take photographs, paint landscapes and play squash or badminton.
