Ann Bernadette Gates.

About Me
[edit | edit source]

I consider myself to be a Mum (first and foremost), a health care leader, clinical pharmacist, and exercise educationalist. I started my career as a clinical pharmacist in the NHS but quickly became interested in leadership and service planning, and my last NHS position was as an NHS Director of Strategic Planning in a mental health trust. I was also Head of Health Strategy, for Trent Strategic Health Authority, UK.

My clinical pharmacy and NHS Director skills cover: cardiovascular disease, cancer (Macmillan Unit Pharmacist for 4 years), falls prevention, osteoporosis, stroke care, mental health, surgery and anaesthetics, service transformation, medicines management, commissioning, strategy, service planning and patient focused care. I have been a GP Practice Pharmacist, a Prescribing Advisor and Head of Medicines Management for a large UK Primary Care Trust (PCT), and an Assistant Director of Modernisation for a PCT.

My exercise and physical activity practice and research interests (which started in 2010), include working with: The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (RCSEd), The World Heart Federation Emerging Leaders Programme, Public Health England, The University of Nottingham Physiotherapy department (teaching undergraduates, and MSc students) Coventry University undergraduate physiotherapist teaching, Glasgow Medical School undergraduate medical school teaching on physical activity and health, and a variety of design and planning organisations such as The Design Council and Ash Sakula Architects  . I'm a Register of Exercise Professionals instructor: Personal Trainer, Exercise Referral Instructor (Level 3) and a BACPR Cardiac Rehabilitation Instructor (Level 4 2012-2018) and a British Nordic Walking Instructor.

I have also worked with Dr Mike Evans of "23 1/2 hours" fame: where we translated and spread a viral video in Arabic.

I am also an experienced speaker, presenter (example), author, researcher social media passionista (@exerciseworks), and blogger. I have been an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) since 2015. You can listen to my Physio Matters podcast here and my BJSM podcast with Mr Ian Ritchie (Past President of the RCSEd) here.

I live in the UK, but/and have a global outlook on all my interests. My main interests reside in improving on the social determinants of health, and promoting health in low and middle income countries. I enjoy walking, running, scuba, windsurfing, gardening and sailing. Our son is a NHS physiotherapist, and most of my extended family/friends, all work for the NHS! I am passionate about exercise prescription in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases and ill health, and established my company, Exercise Works in 2011.

Here is more about me and the work I do. My most proud "work moment", was having our exercise medicine resources accessed across over 450 departments of undergraduate schools of health and medicine and endorsed for use by The Council of Deans of Health UK.

I love spinach, seafood, sushi, organic food and fine wine. And in an ideal world, when I'm not working, or in Mum mode, I would windsurf, everyday! (In warm, sunny waters, with amazing breezes).
