User:Alishah Merchant

Alishah Merchant is registered physiotherapist in Ontario, Canada and has her fellow of the Canadian Association of Manipulative Therapists (FCAMT) and practices at Rebalance Sports Medicine in downtown Toronto. She graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Health Science from the University of Western Ontario in 2005. This degree sparked her interest in healthcare and peaked her interest in the human body and anatomy. She continued on the receive her Masters of Science in Physical Therapy in 2007 at McMaster University. After successfully graduating from the Masters of Physical Therapy program, Alishah practiced in orthopaedic physiotherapy and sports medicine for a few years. She realized that she had much more to learn and was very interested in manual therapy as this approach had the most significant effects on her patient population. In 2010, she decided to pursue her interest in manual therapy and study Manipulative Therapy at the University of Western Ontario. She completed her Masters of Clinical Science in Manipulative Therapy and achieved the designation as a Fellow of the Canadian Association of Manipulative Therapy in 2011.

Alishah's curiosity has not just guided her University education. Alishah has also taken many post-graduate courses in order to stay advanced in her field of orthopaedic physiotherapy and sports medicine. She has completed coursework in acupuncture, Pilates, and soft tissue release. She has also taken specific coursework in running injuries, advanced manual therapy, functional strengthening, mobilizations with movement and core strengthening. More recently, Alishah studied with Diane Lee and has incorporated the integrated systems model into her practice focussing on determining "drivers" of injury/pathology in order to find the most efficient and effective approach to treating her clients.

Alishah enjoys treating a wide range of conditions ranging from sport injuries to repetitive strain injuries and chronic persistent pain syndromes. Alishah's philosophy is to look at the whole body in order to identify the areas of failed load transfer and determine the "driver" of the problem. Her ultimate goal is the treat the root cause of the condition in order to achieve results in the most efficient and effective manner. Alishah also takes a preventative approach to treatment whereby she addresses faulty movement patterns and corrects them early on to prevent future re-injury. Alishah believes that the best approach is to use a combination of manual therapy and acupuncture to treat tissue and joint restrictions and then provide specific exercises to improve flexibility and strength in order to restore normal movement patterns

Alishah is a very active member of her profession. She is a member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) and an active member of their Orthopaedic Division. She is a clinical facilitator with the Univeristy of Toronto Physical Therapy Department and an assistant instructor with the Orthopaedic Division’s manual therapy training program. Additionally, she provides mentorship hours to physiotherapists pursuing their manual therapy designation.
